NT/NB Scan: A Vital Prenatal Screening
The nuchal translucency (NT) scan is a key test done between 11 weeks and 13 weeks plus 6 days of pregnancy when the baby is about 45 to 84 mm long. This scan helps assess the risk of certain chromosomal conditions, including Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), by measuring the fluid at the back of the baby’s neck, checking if the nasal bone is present, and evaluating the baby’s heart rate. These measurements are combined with a blood test to give a clearer picture of risk. Besides assessing risk, this scan is valuable for accurately dating your pregnancy, spotting major fetal abnormalities early, and identifying if you’re having more than one baby. It also helps determine how the placental structure could affect the outcome in multiple pregnancies.
Why is it Important?
- Early Detection: NT/NB scan provides an early opportunity to identify potential risks.
- Non-Invasive: It’s a safe and non-invasive procedure.
- Informed Decisions: The results can help parents make informed decisions about further testing.
What Does the Scan Involve?
Nuchal Translucency (NT): The ultrasound technician measures the thickness of a clear space at the back of the baby’s neck. A thicker NT measurement can be associated with an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities.
Nasal Bone (NB): The presence or absence of the nasal bone is also assessed. A missing or small nasal bone can be another indicator of increased risk.
What Happens After the Scan?
Risk Assessment: The NT measurement and nasal bone presence are combined with other factors like maternal age and blood tests to calculate the risk of chromosomal abnormalities.
Further Testing: If the risk assessment is high, your healthcare provider may recommend additional tests, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS), for a definitive diagnosis.
Important Note: While NT/NB scan is a valuable screening tool, it’s not a diagnostic test. A positive screening result does not guarantee a diagnosis.
