Fetal Therapy
Fetal therapy refers to medical interventions and treatments designed to address and manage conditions affecting a fetus while still in the womb. The goal is to improve the health and development of the fetus and, when possible, resolve or alleviate conditions that could lead to complications or serious outcomes after birth. This field includes various procedures and techniques, ranging from diagnostic tests to surgical interventions, tailored to the specific needs of the fetus and the pregnancy.
Intrauterine blood transfusion (IUT) is a procedure where blood is transfused directly into the fetus’s circulation through the umbilical cord to treat severe anemia or other blood disorders while still in the womb. It is typically performed when there is evidence of fetal anemia, often due to conditions like Rh or ABO incompatibility or fetal infection. This intervention is done by specialized fetal medicine teams, usually in a hospital setting equipped with advanced imaging and support. The procedure can help prevent complications such as heart failure or stillbirth, improving overall outcomes by stabilizing the fetus’s condition. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, or preterm labor. Despite these risks, IUT can significantly enhance survival and health prospects for the fetus.
Common Types of Fetal Therapy:
Fetal Surgery: Performed in utero to address certain structural abnormalities or conditions. Examples include repairing spina bifida, treating diaphragmatic hernia, and correcting cardiac defects.
Fetal Transfusion: Administering blood transfusions to fetuses with blood disorders like anemia or hydrops fetalis.
Laser Therapy: Using a laser beam to treat vascular abnormalities, such as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) or placental abnormalities.
Endoscopic Procedures: Performing minimally invasive procedures using a small camera and surgical instruments. Examples include removing fetal tumors or treating fetal hydrocephalus.
Important Considerations:
Risks: Fetal therapy involves risks, including the possibility of miscarriage or preterm birth.
Specialized Care: These procedures require specialized expertise and facilities.
Individualized Approach: The decision to undergo fetal therapy is highly individualized and should be discussed with a team of medical professionals.
