Fetal Echocardiography
Fetal echocardiography is a specialized ultrasound examination that focuses on the heart of the developing fetus. It’s used to assess the structure and function of the fetal heart and to detect any potential abnormalities or defects.
When is Fetal Echocardiography Recommended?
Family History: If there is a family history of heart defects or other cardiac conditions.
Maternal Conditions: Certain maternal conditions, such as diabetes or infections, can increase the risk of fetal heart problems.
Abnormal Ultrasound Findings: If other ultrasounds have shown abnormalities that may affect the heart.
Specific Concerns: If there are specific concerns about the baby’s heart development.
What Does a Fetal Echocardiography Involve?
Detailed Examination: The ultrasound technician will carefully examine the various chambers of the fetal heart, the valves, and the blood flow.
Measurements: The size and function of the heart will be assessed.
Abnormalities: The scan can help identify potential abnormalities such as heart defects, arrhythmias, or other cardiac conditions.
Important Note: Fetal echocardiography is a valuable tool for assessing the health of the baby’s heart, but it’s not always able to detect all abnormalities. It’s essential to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
