Early Pregnancy Scan: A Visual Confirmation
An early pregnancy ultrasound, typically performed between conception and 10 weeks after the last menstrual period, aims to confirm the pregnancy, determine its age, count the number of embryos, and check for normal development and potential abnormalities, such as ectopic pregnancy or early signs of genetic issues like Down syndrome. The procedure may involve an abdominal or transvaginal probe, depending on the clarity needed. While it provides important early information, it does not substitute for the more detailed 18-20 week anatomy scan.
Key Purposes of an Early Pregnancy Scan:
Confirmation of Pregnancy: Detects the presence of a gestational sac and, in many cases, a developing embryo.
Gestational Age Estimation: Measures the crown-rump length of the embryo to estimate the due date.
Fetal Heart Rate Assessment: Checks for a fetal heartbeat, a vital sign indicating a healthy pregnancy.
Ectopic Pregnancy Detection: Identifies if the pregnancy is developing outside the uterus, a condition known as ectopic pregnancy.
Multiple Gestation Assessment: Determines if there are multiple fetuses present.
Reassurance and Peace of Mind: Provides reassurance to expectant parents about the early stages of pregnancy
What to Expect During an Early Pregnancy Scan:
Preparation: You may be asked to drink plenty of fluids before the scan to ensure a full bladder.
Procedure: The ultrasound technician will use a transducer to transmit sound waves into your abdomen. The echoes will be used to create images of the developing embryo and its surroundings.
Duration: The scan typically takes around 15-20 minutes.
If you have concerns about your pregnancy or are experiencing symptoms like bleeding or abdominal pain, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider. They can recommend an early pregnancy scan and provide further guidance.
