Anomaly Scan: A Comprehensive Guide
An anomaly scan is a comprehensive ultrasound that examines the baby’s structures in detail to identify any developmental issues. It is crucial for detecting abnormalities, guiding appropriate care and precautions throughout pregnancy and delivery. This scan also helps evaluate the risk of chromosomal abnormalities and is most effective when used alongside first trimester screening for enhanced accuracy. If any structural problems are found, further investigations can be conducted to understand the underlying cause, and counseling will be provided to discuss the implications and future pregnancy considerations.
What Does an Anomaly Scan Involve?
Comprehensive Examination: The ultrasound technician will carefully examine the baby’s head, face, heart, lungs, abdomen, limbs, and spine.
Measurements: The baby’s growth and development will be measured to ensure they are within the normal range.
Placenta and Amniotic Fluid: The placenta and amniotic fluid will also be assessed.
What Can Be Detected in an Anomaly Scan?
Major Birth Defects: Conditions such as cleft lip, heart defects, spina bifida, and hydrocephalus.
Chromosomal Abnormalities: While not as accurate as genetic testing, the scan can sometimes provide clues about chromosomal abnormalities.
Multiple Gestations: If carrying twins or more, the scan can help determine the number and type of fetuses.
Important Note: While anomaly scans are highly effective, they cannot detect all birth defects. It’s essential to remember that a normal anomaly scan does not guarantee a healthy baby.
What to Expect During an Anomaly Scan
Duration: The scan typically takes around 30-45 minutes.
Preparation: You may be asked to drink plenty of fluids before the scan to ensure a full bladder.
Comfort: The ultrasound technician will use a warm gel to conduct the scan, which is usually painless.
