Growth Scan
A growth scan in the third trimester is vital as it monitors fetal growth, assesses amniotic fluid levels, and evaluates placental function. This scan helps detect issues like intrauterine growth restriction or excessive fetal growth, ensures proper amniotic fluid levels, and checks that the placenta is supporting the fetus adequately. It also provides critical information about fetal well-being and assists in planning the delivery, making it an essential tool for ensuring both maternal and fetal health.
Why is a Growth Scan Performed?
To monitor fetal growth: This is especially important if the mother has certain health conditions, such as gestational diabetes or high blood pressure, or if there are concerns about the baby’s growth.
To estimate due date: The scan can help determine the baby’s gestational age and estimate the due date.
To identify fetal growth restriction (FGR): If the baby is not growing as expected, a growth scan can help identify FGR.
To assess the need for early delivery: If the baby is not growing adequately, an early delivery may be necessary.
What to Expect During a Growth Scan:
Preparation: No special preparation needed.
Procedure: The ultrasound technician will use a transducer to scan your abdomen, creating images of the baby. The baby’s head, abdomen, and femur will be measured.
Duration: The scan typically takes around 20-30 minutes.
After the Scan
- Your doctor will review the results with you and discuss any concerns or recommendations.
- If the baby is not growing as expected, further testing or monitoring may be necessary.
